Mocking of Christ
Annibale Carracci, Italian (1560-1609)
Oil on canvas
Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna

The Carracci was a family of painters from Bologna – Annibale Carracci, his brother, Agostino, and cousin, Lodovico, were prominent figures in the Italian art scene of the late 16th century.  Early in their careers, the three worked together, and opened a private teaching academy, dedicated to what was then progressive art.  In 1595, Annibale was called to Rome to paint inside the the Cardinal’s palace, and it is said that he drew inspiration from Michelangelo’s Sistene Ceiling.  His work had fallen out of favor until he was “rediscovered” in an exhibition of the family’s works in 1956.
