Ecce Homo  ("Behold the Man")
Antonio Ciseri, Swiss (1821-1891)
Oil on canvas
Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Florence

Antonio Ciseri helped revitalize the art of religious painting at a time when subject matter had become almost exclusively secular.  His work is reminiscent of the masters of the Italian Renaissance, such as Raphael, who connects with the viewer by offering a different vantage point of the subject.  Ciseri’s trademark style was his clarity and detail, which led some to believe that his works were actually hand-colored photographs.
