Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, we pray you to set your passion, cross, and death between your judgment and our souls, now and in the hour of our death.

Give mercy and grace to the living; pardon and rest to the dead; to your holy Church peace and concord; and to us sinners everlasting life and glory;

for with the Father the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

The Trinity with the Dead Christ, c. 1590
Lodovico Carracci, Italian (1555-1619)
Pinacoteca, Vatican

The Carracci was a family of painters from Bologna – brothers Annibale and Agostino, and cousin Lodovico Carracci, were prominent figures in the Italian art scene of the late 16th century.  Early in their careers, the three worked together, and opened a private teaching academy, dedicated to what was then progressive art.  Lodovico was a fairly shy person who never found real success, unlike his cousin Annibale (see Station VI).  He spent most of his life in the cozy atmosphere of Bologna, where he also produced etchings and where most of his work still remains.  During his lifetime, his work was criticized for being “uneven” (his use of broad artistic gestures) and “highly personal” (his use of light to create spiritual emotion).
